What’s On My Back?

Here’s a look at some of the gear I will be carrying during my Walk Across Puerto Rico. Now that it’s all laid out I will start the editing process to see where I can shave off a few pounds.

When I walked across the deep South in 2018, I overpacked and my 70 liter backpack weighted almost 60 pounds as I marched out of Selma. After shedding some weight in Montgomery, I was able to reduce it by about five pounds. Then when I added extra water for the next leg of the trip, the overall weight again jumped by two or three pounds.

Then along the route a number of Trail Angels stopped me to offer more water and sport drinks and you feel obliged to accept it so as not offend them. Next thing you know your backpack again weights 60 pounds. It’s a good problem to have when hiking.
