Juneteenth Schedule of Activities in Galveston

I’d like to thank historian Sam Collins, of Galveston, for sharing the Reedy Chapel AME Church itinerary for the celebration of Emancipation this Juneteenth.

I first made contact with Sam last summer after hearing him speak about Juneteenth on a local television news report. I was so impressed with his ease and knowledge of the subject matter I immediately realized he was the person I needed to talk to about my next Walk to Freedom project. I emailed him and we arranged a time to talk. During the conversation he told me he was planning a trip to Philly in the fall. We planned a meet up and like most tourists to the city he wanted an authentic Philly cheesesteak, so we met at Geno’s Steaks in South Philly. Whenever I have had a question about a specific topic related to the history of Galveston after Freedom Day, Collins has been generous with his time in picturing the mid-19th century local landscape for the enslaved on Galveston Island.
