Dear Friends: This Saturday and Sunday I will be concluding a 265-mile walk to New York City from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, following the Underground Railroad through Brooklyn, Manhattan and ending at the Harriet Tubman Memorial in Harlem.
I’m inviting friends and interested community members to join me and my brother, Keir, for some or all of the walk if you choose, as we symbolically celebrate and rejoice in Freedom as experienced by African Americans arriving in New York in the mid-19th century. Most were considered fugitive slaves for escaping oppression and violence while making harrowing journeys to avoid slave catchers to reach the Gateway to Freedom – New York.
After a year of lock down due to the current pandemic, here’s an opportunity to bring the family out for an informal history walk across parts of the city.
I will be updating the Walking Schedule page this week as I figure out logistics for crossing from Staten Island to Brooklyn. www.ourwalktofreedom
