Catoctin Furnace Freedom Seeker Ads

Less than 12.5 miles from the Pennsylvania border, men, women and children enslaved at Catoctin Furnance self-emancipated themselves when they felt the “gitten was good.” The Freedom Seeker Ads printed in area newspapers illustrate their resistance to enslavement. ¬†Yet there is no absolute proof of successful escapes from Catoctin.The Iron Road map below, if overlayed known Underground Railroad routes across the borderland of Maryland and Pennsylvania into Adams and York counties, illustrates how Iron Furnaces frequently shared the same routes to freedom as the Underground Railroad.
