Gale Carter and the Tower of Freedom

I met Gale Carter on a cold, blustery, day in late December, upon arrival in Windsor, Canada. She and a small group of other local residents, Carmen Carter, Lana Talbot, Gale Carter, Shantelle Browning Morgan, and Shantelle’s daughter, Anisa, came out to welcome Moe Knaus and I before we started our Walk to Freedom journey to the Josiah Henson Museum in Dresden.

After introducing us to the Tower of Freedom monument, dedicated to Freedom Seekers who crossed the Detroit River to reach freedom in the mid-1800s, Carter took us on a walking tour of the McDougall Street Corridor where the newly arrived Freedom Seekers settled. After the tour, the group said good-bye as Moe and I started our walk to the Sandwich First Baptist Church.
