Emancipation National Historic Trail Map

Map of the proposed 51-mile Emancipation National Historic Trail from Galveston to Houston that Walk to Freedom will be intersecting with walking June 18-24, 2024.

We will not be following the exact route being studied by the National Park Service, instead following a zig-zagging route that intersects with Emancipation Trail as it crosses Galveston, Brazoria, and Harris Counties. We will begin in Galveston cross over the Galveston Bay to Texas City, walk to La Marque, Santa Fe, Friendswood, to South Houston to Columbia Tap Trail. The walk will conclude at Emancipation Park and Freedmen’s Town.

The current National Park Service feasibility study is based on years of research by Ms. Naomi Mitchell Carrier,  Founder of the Texas Center for African American Living History. We would also like to thank historians Sam Collins and Brady Mora for their vital assistance.
