As I begin to countdown the Juneteenth Emancipation walk from Galveston to Houston I will be doing with my good friend Kenny Johnston, I wanted to share some of the stories we’ve begun encountering. I’ll start with the story of John Henry (Jack) Yates, a freeman who voluntarily allowed himself to be enslaved in order to keep his family together. Yet six years after emancipation, he not only built his own home, but also played a key role in establishing Freedmen’s Town in Houston, Texas. Click on the picture of Yates to learn more about this courageous leader.
