Register Here to Walk for Freedom

Come join us on Mon, Jun 24, 2024 at 9:30 AM at the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church for a 2-4 mile walk of celebration and reflection.

This event commemorates the days immediately following news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the last enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865.

We will welcome and join up with members of Walk to Freedom as they arrive at the Columbia Tap Trail following a 51-mile walk from Galveston to Houston recalling ancestors forced off the land and into the hot sun with no where to go after Emancipation.

Walking with Friends of the Columbia Tap Trail and Fit Houston we will follow the trail about one and a  half miles before turning off to Emancipation Park. After reaching Emancipation Park some members of the group will continue on for another two miles where the walk will end at the Rutherford B.H. Yates House in Freedmen’s Town.

To sign up to join the walk, go to our Eventbrite registration page.
